“SA’s premier the international Kanazawa cup 2014 was an overwhelming success with several countries from abroad viz Cameroon,Muritius,Mozambique and Columbia in attendance” said tournament director Kyoshi Sonny Pillay
The event dubbed the Battle of the “best of the best “ attracted in excess of 500 participants (including many of the top ranked tournament fighters) from around the republic of South Africa
Phoenix township educator Damian Nair and Sinawo Dasyi Kanazawa cup champions dominated the Senior mens open black belt divisions in the Kumite categories whilst Riashi singh (UKZN engineering student) was crowned the Senior ladies open black belt champ for the 3rd year in succession
Young Morningside primary pupil Samantha Yolisiwa and Thiara Reddy captured gold medals in the children divisions
Chief guests Carlos Vilela the CEO of KSA (national fed) and Prof Ndabandaba National MP expressed their delight at the high standard of karate on display by the athletes thro ‘out the day
Chairman of the championships Grandmaster Murakami from Japan said that he was impressed by the strong fighting spirit exhibited by the youth in particular and further added that the Kanazawa cup is growing in leaps and bounds since he has come to SA in 2001
Chief referee of the event Dr Zaheed Khan complimented the fighters especially the black belts on exhibiting superb control on their point scoring techniques “our medics had very little to do on the day as the injuries were minimal “ said Dr Khan
Kyoshi Sonny Pillay concluded by saying the the part sponsorship received from Damelin part of the Educor group added great value to the high quality and professionalism of the International Kanazawa cup 2014
