soccer greats sewnarian lall,daya maistry and billy reddy received commendation awards for their brilliance in the field of the beautiful game
shihan stanley khoza was honored for his contribution to the karate fraternity of kwa zulu natal
guitar maestro the "george benson" of SA gordon franks received a commendation award for his splendid "sound of music" that has brought peace joy and happiness to people of the rainbow nation
posthumous awards were presented to the late football genius dharam mohan and perhaps the greatest gentleman of the soccer lionel homiel
champion golfer of the apartheid era paul letchmiah (kyoshi caddied for him for 5yrs in the 60's) was commended for his outstanding contribution to the non white golfing fraternity
in addition nisharlan sewgolum stepped up to the podium with cousin brother shaun to receive the posthumous award of their grandfather the late golfing maestro (3 time dutch open champion) SS PAPWA whom kyoshi pillay idolised during his golfing days at the original non white sub standard golf course "springfield" where kyoshi served a caddie for 10years
these unsung heroes set the bench mark for me as an emerging sportsman in the 60's said kyoshi pillay when i first saw dharam mohan i dreamed of being like him later when i started to play golf as a caddie i idolised the great papwa but i soon found out that they were a rare breed of "master class" but i was undeterred and persued
moreover i continued to strive spilling blood sweat and tears along the way and alas finally i am proud that today on my 60th birthday i am recognised for successfully making a difference in the lives of so many youth amongst the downtrodden
